Continuous Surfaces in Hospitality: Designing Calm at Scale

Ro Design | 6 September 2026

Projects

In hospitality, a guest rarely remembers a single element. They remember an atmosphere — and atmosphere is largely a function of continuity.

One material, many rooms

When the same mineral surface carries from the entrance through the lobby, into the lift lobbies and the spa, the building stops feeling assembled and starts feeling composed. Handcrafted concrete is well suited to this role because it can shift register without changing identity: smoother and paler where the space should breathe, sandblasted and deeper where it should feel enveloping.

Durability that does not look defensive

Commercial interiors are usually protected with materials that read as commercial. Concrete avoids that compromise. It tolerates traffic, humidity and cleaning regimes while keeping the character of a bespoke finish, and localised repair or replacement is straightforward because the material is modular.

Inside and out

Arrival sequences are where continuity is most valuable and most often lost. Collections designed for both interior and exterior use — RO’s In & Out among them — allow a façade, a terrace and a lobby wall to share one surface language, so the threshold becomes a transition rather than a break.

Working with the specification team

Large projects reward early engagement. Sampling in the actual light of the site, agreeing tonal ranges rather than single references, and planning joint layouts alongside the lighting design will do more for the finished result than any decision made on site. Handcraft implies variation; the specification should embrace it deliberately rather than discover it late.

Done well, the surface disappears into the experience. That is precisely the ambition.
